MSG artist David Peters recently finished collaboration on an art book surrounding his work, ‘Forever More Than Once.’ The book, which was a collaboration between Peters, a photographer, a writer, and a designer, was printed at a local newspaper on newsprint. It unfolds into a large tiling poster, while when folded and nested it creates an art book. Each book is presented in a transparent envelope.

Gareth Mason // ‘Coming of Age’ // 2011

Gareth Mason is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and Brother of the Art Workers Guild, London.  His work is exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions both in England and Europe.  In February 2011, his first solo exhibition in America, entitled ‘Other Forces,’ was held in the Jason Jacques Gallery in Manhattan.  A short film about his practice entitled ‘White’ was awarded Grand Prix at the Projections D’Argile film festival, Montpellier, France in 2002.  In 2006, he participated in the European Keramik Symposium, Gmunden, and the accompanying European touring exhibition.

A major solo exhibition entitled ‘An Unfolding Narrative’ was held in 2007 at Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House.  He is a member of the International Association for Ceramic Art Education and Exchange and contributed to their conferences in Farnham (England), Nairobi (Kenya), and Icheon (Korea).  His vessel, ‘Open’, received an Honorable Mention Award at the World Ceramic Biennale Exhibition, Yeoju, Korea 2009.  Recent talks and demonstrations include: invited speaker at the 2008 CAAI International Ceramics Conference, Tel Hai, Israel; and Invited Speaker at 2009 Ege University International Art Days symposium, Izmir, Turkey. Mason also presented an address, ‘Fire, Ceramics Mystery, and Creativity’ in the Lecture Series at the 2011 Sculpture Objects and Functional Art Fair, Chicago, and was a Visiting Artist at California State University, Long Beach, in October of the same year.

His most recent shows include ‘Fire and Wax,’ a two-person exhibition with New York painter Martin Kline in 2012, and ‘Friendship Forged in Fire’ at the American Museum of Ceramic Art in 2013, his first exhibition in California. He lives and works in Hampshire, England.

The Mindy Solomon Gallery will be hosting an Opening Night Reception for Gareth Mason’s ceramic work on Saturday, May 26 from 6-9pm, with an artist’s talk at 6:30pm.  This new exhibition, ‘Material Inspiration,’ runs through June 29th.

Zona Maco Mexico Arte Contemporaneo, the art fair of Mexico, celebrates its tenth edition this year, and has become the most important contemporary art window into Latin America. MSG will be exhibiting the work of Korean ceramic artist Lee Kang Hyo at the fair in booth ZMD13 from April 10-14 in Mexico City.

Lee Kang Hyo // Puncheong Jar (The Sky) // 2012

Since its inception in 2009, the Mindy Solomon Gallery has emphasized a strong programmatic focus on Korean artwork, particularly ceramics. Artist Lee Kang Hyo, whom the Gallery will feature at Zona Maco, epitomizes the elegance, simplicity, and historic significance that is emblematic of Korean Buncheong ceramics. Kang Hyo’s masterful throwing skills translate to work that is timeless, solid design. Combining basic forms, such as the moon jar, platter, water jar, and large-scale Onggi pot with expressive pure liquid white slip, the energy conveyed in his works is rich as well as minimal. Creating that response is masterful—Kang Hyo’s translation of  touch through form pulls the viewer closer to the work. Placement of these objects in a formal setting changes the energy and harmony of a space. Equally at home in a minimal, contemporary setting or a formal room resplendent with Asian décor, Kang Hyo’s ceramics inform and enhance.

Presenting contemporary art of significant collectability and value, in an exhibition program focused on contemporary design, is a new professional direction for Mindy Solomon Gallery. Innately, collectors purchase art as a means of transforming their environment—whether it be for purely cerebral reasons or spatial adaptation, the latter representing the inherent need to collect without prior knowledge of where and how to place the work. Surface and spatial design with fine art not only create visual movement, but a lasting opportunity to build artistic legacy through design. Ultimately, how one chooses to collect is simply a pathway to a more stimulating life experience. It is the intention of the Mindy Solomon Gallery to be a guiding force in that journey.

About the Artist
Lee Kang Hyo was born in Inch’on in 1961, and now lives and works in North Ch’ungch’ong Province, South Korea. He graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Department of Ceramics at Hongik University in 1983, followed by a three-year apprenticeship in a workshop in South Kyongsang Province learning to produce Onggi ware. Onggi containers, which can attain the height of an adult person, are built from long coils of clay and then shaped on a potter’s wheel. They are traditionally used for the storage of soy sauce and kimch’i, the pickled vegetables indispensable to any Korean meal.

Lee Kang Hyo’s ceramics reflect the punch’ong tradition of gray stoneware decorated with white slip. The subtle color variations range from milky white to a spectrum of grays and beiges, to pink and rusty red, and to an earthy dark brown. Kang Hyo achieves such subtlety by firing the works in a kiln he built himself in 1992 in the customary manner, using lumps of clay rather than bricks.

Born in 1967 and educated at the famous Otis Parsons School of Art in Los Angeles, California, Hommert’s background as a successful textile artist and designer led her to explore abstraction and the use of color and light in painting as another form of textural experimentation. Pushing the possibilities of pigment and surface with an almost alchemistic precision, she creates colorful surfaces that project prismatic color and pattern.

Hommert writes in her artist statement:

“Light and the reflection of light, how it interacts in an environment, is a constant thread that flows through my work. I am captivated by the silvery light glistening off alpine icicles and the lavender iridescence of sunset on water. It’s elusive, full of movement, ever changing, and it’s this ephemeral quality that intrigues me. How the passing of time plays off the luminous surfaces of each painting–the highs and lows, the shadows and relief. The color subtly shifts too, as the light moves through a space from sunrise to sunset, or as you move through the room. An organic calendar that clocks both physical movement and the passage of time. My technique has evolved as a way to capture the liquid and fluid nature of light, and I am drawn to materials that enhance and illuminate: pearly paua shell, metal leaf, holographic paper, crystalline mineral salts, beeswax, resin. By building up layers of materials from the opaque to translucent to transparent, then using a flame to burn away portions, I create depth and texture. Exposing elements that are underneath holds a hint of mystery that’s akin to uncovering buried treasure. Introducing dimension as a factor, I can express not only surface texture and depth, but different perspectives; the highs and lows offering yet another way to play with and capture light.”
