Gary Petersen // Purchase Award from American Academy of Arts and Letters

Represented Mindy Solomon Gallery artist Gary Petersen is one of nineteen artists honored this year with an American Academy of Arts and Letters purchase award; the Academy’s purchase of Petersen’s work will appear in an American museum as part of the permanent collection.

These awards will be presented in New York City in May 2014, at the Academy’s annual ceremony. The art prizes, totaling $112,500, honor both established and emerging artists. The award winners were chosen from a group of thirty-seven artists who had been invited to participate in the Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts.

The Academy’s purchase program began in 1946 in order to place the work of talented, living American artists in museums across the country. Since the inauguration of this program, the Academy has spent nearly $3 million to purchase over 1,100 works of art.
